Venus is the symbol for love and is powerfully romantic when combined with Neptune the planet of self-sacrificing, dreamy idealism. This year's Valentine's Day is particularly special with the conjunction of Venus and Neptune on that day. Valentine's Day has been celebrated as the day for love long before the tragic story of Catholic Bishop Valentine who suffered execution (on February 24th) for marrying people. For nearly 850 years it was first celebrated as a young man's rite of passage during the holiday of the pagan god, Lupercus, in mid-February. The tradition of sending love notes has its roots in the story of a sentimental Catholic bishop (also Neptune-ruled) Valentine, who left a note behind for the woman who visited him while he waited his execution. He was sent to his death simply for marrying couples against a law prohibiting engagements and marriage around 270 AD by Roman Emperor Claudius II, who banned marriage because he was unable to attract volunteers for his army, blaming the men's attachment to lovers and mates as a reason for a lack of interest in defending their country. With many followers the tradition began of passing love notes on February 14. Some two hundred years later he became the patron Saint of Love (actually as a means by the Catholic church to eliminate the pagan holiday for Lupercus). The story has such a Venus-Neptune theme that it inspired me to search for the last time Venus and Neptune were conjunct on Valentine's Day, as they are on February 14, 2005. Surprisingly, this is a rare event. The last time there was a conjunction between Venus and Neptune on Valentine's Day was on February 14, 1537. In 1537, King Henry VIII declares February 14 as "St. Valentine's Day" by Royal Charter. Here we are in 2005 and the astrological unconditional love emblem of Venus and Neptune is back perhaps to bring our attention to the power of love. We may look around and see who comes together during this time and how love motivates our choices and objectives. Interestingly, Royal blessings were just recently bestowed upon Prince Charles and his long beloved, Camilla Parker Bowles, who will marry on the day of a Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2005. The universe does support a case for astrology. Perhaps there is a universal wish that those who love truly and unconditionally come together, with a special blessing.
